2009 420 world was held in Lake Garda in Italy where is famous as the windy venue. In the various wind conditions during the regatta All 3 boats showed great performance in speed with 42M-7 main, 42J-7 jib and 42S-1 spinnaker.
Moreover, 420 Europeans was held at Balaton in Hungary where is famous for light wind with flat water. North Radial perform greatly there as well to win it again.
New rig set-up number will be up-dated in new tuning table coming out shortly.
420 World Men's Winner / Antonios Tsiboukelis and Georgios Karonis (GRE)
Greek coach Dmitris sent us the report of 420 World and Europeans below
for us.
The winners of the 2009 Worlds in the 420 class are Antonios Tsiboukelis and Georgios Karonis of Greece GRE53161.
The two sailors were very consistent in the Riva high wind conditions (12 to 22 knots) and managed to win the championship with races 3, 1, 2, 5, 2, 7, 1, and 5.
They won the championship without racing the last race and to me and many others were clearly the fastest boat in these worlds.
420 European Winner
Andreas/Alexandros (GRE)
Greek boat GRE53460, won the Europeans.
This boat is sailed by Andreas and Alexandros Bakatsias (brothers). They sailed superbly since they won the championship arriving either first or second in every race (8 races in total). When they were ahead they managed to retain their position while when they were behind they would just surpass the leading boats. They were clearly the fastest boat in the competition with weather conditions between 6 and 19 knots.
I know that my teams are all weather teams? ? something we worked very hard to achieve throughout the year but I am now sure that your sails (we used North Sails for main, jib and spinnaker on both boats) are also all weather sails? ? and helped us achieve this unique result, namely winning both the Worlds and the Europeans this year.
As far as I can remember, no teams from the same country and the same club have ever won the Words and the Europeans the same year.

In early 2006 we started developing a new 420 radial design for the worlds in 2007 in NZ. We initially started the development from the same design program as the 470 radial designs which we had a big success in 470 world fleet.
From here we added extra technical focus in the design required only for 420 in regards to the limited amount of controls and also having to use the windward jib sheet to barber haul the jib.
After 8 months developing work and testing, we completed the final designs two weeks before the Worlds.
The sails were used by one of the Kiwi sailors who finished 5th after only 3 weeks preparation and sailing. The sails also won the New Zealand 420 National Championships in 2007 with a different Kiwi crew.
This design already has people talking as the sails are quick in all conditions, and we also achieved our goal of the sails being easy to trim, which is important in the 420, as of the limited amount of sail controls the sailor has in this boat. This was achieved from its beautifully balanced shape on the water, of which twist profile is nice and easy to trim which is essential for the young sailors.
Yarn Stress on 420 sails
Calculated by Membrain TM
The spinnaker was a huge sensation at the Worlds; with the kiwi team being very fast. They were able to sail lower and faster on the runs and were quick on the long reaches. This design comes from the 470 which 90% of the top sailors in the fleet use. It gave a huge impression on the all the sailors present.
Our new spinnaker computer design program makes it able to design the spinnaker to have the maximum projected area with good stability.
42M-7 Japanese Design
This main sail design was developed after a lot of hard work, doing 6 trial designs before we perfected this design. The main focus was having the sail with the correct entry angle, as of the windward sheeted jib, the correct lower depth and twist as the bridle traveller means the boom canft be centered all the time, and with enough depth in the top of the sail to give comfortable power to the sailors.
42J-9Japanese Design
As with the main sail design, there is particular way of using with the jib, which is playing both leeward and windward sheets, as the eyelet to lead the jib sheet on the deck was designed in a bad position. This makes getting the perfect design complicated. We worked hard on leech profile and depth down low, so with using the windward jib sheet the leech profile is even. It has comfortable entry angle making it easy to steer in both the choppy and flat water.
Again the focus was on the ease of trim for the sailor, so then the sailor knows they are fast and can then concentrate on racing.
42J-9 has exactly the same sail shape as 42J-7 , but with new foot profile for better suit for the new foot measurement way.The way of use is the same as before.

42S-05Japanese Design
This is designed based on 42S-1 to make it fuller and stable which makes trimming easier.
It works well especially in choppy water.
However it has a bit smaller project area than 42S-1.
One lens foot panel was added under new rule. the shape is exactly the same as former 42S-5.

42S-01Japanese Design
The design built based on our most popular 470 design performs great at both running and reaching. Biggest project area, easy to trim, good organized balanced depth through top to bottom makes the trimming easier. As the depth itself is a little flatter, you can play the spinnaker pole height to make it stable when required.
Having the spinnaker with maximum area but flat means the sail is fast on both the reaching legs and also the run.
One lens foot panel was added under new rule. the shape is exactly the same as former 42S-1.
